Last summer, an amazing resource launched across the country. It’s the national mental health crisis line. Just like you would dial 911 for a physical emergency, you can press three simple numbers in a mental health emergency. This is your reminder to dial 988.
Who you gonna call? 988
The national mental health crisis and suicide line has been around for a long time. Their team of dedicated, caring, and trained individuals is available to answer calls to support community members through times of mental health crisis.
But that resource used to come with a long, easy-to-forget phone number. In a crisis, you’re not very likely to remember a number you rarely (if ever) dial. And you don’t want to have to take the time to look it up.
So the federal government stepped in. Legislation to give the line a new, simpler number nationwide passed in 2020. And last summer, that number finally came to be.
Now, whenever you or anyone in your life needs prompt mental health support, you can dial 988.
Using this resource
988 is there when you’re not sure what to do. If you’re having suicidal thoughts, you can call that number. If your friend has a panic attack and you don’t know how to help them, call 988. If you see someone on the street who you think is a danger to themselves or others because of mental illness, dial it up.
Just like 911, this number gives you a resource to use in an emergency. So take some time today to commit these three digits to memory. You never know when you might need the support of a trained mental health expert.
Added support for veterans and active-duty military members
988 offers support and guidance for anyone who calls and that includes veterans and people currently serving in the military. But if you want even more tailored support, press “1” after you dial 988. This way, you’ll connect to the Veterans Crisis Lifeline, where the people answering your call have particular knowledge of the treatments and resources available for this population.
