Medicine is shifting. While recent decades of medical treatment have focused on alleviating symptoms, more and more medical practitioners are moving towards a holistic approach. They seek to treat the root cause of the issue plaguing their patient. And they’re using more alternative healing treatments to help them do that. Reiki is a perfect example.
Reiki is an ancient healing tradition. It got its start in Japan in the late 1800s. For over a century, healers have been using this technique to balance and promote wellbeing. So what is it?
Reiki 101
Reiki is energy healing. The name comes from the Japanese words “rei,” meaning universal, and “ki,” meaning life energy.
This type of energy therapy is delivered by a practitioner who lays their hands on the person receiving the treatment. In this way, the healer can sense the energy fields in the patient’s body. The entire philosophy behind this energy healing technique is founded on the idea that every human has energy flowing through their body. But sometimes, that energy can get stuck.
These energy blocks lead to a number of problems, from physical illnesses to stress to mental disorders. The goal of a Reiki session is to remove these blocks and restore the full, natural flow of energy in the body.
What should I expect during a Reiki session?
Reiki is a hands-on healing technique. Unlike massage, however, you’ll be fully clothed during your session. You sit or lie down and relax as your healer places his or her hands gently on targeted locations throughout your body.
As your healer places their hands on specific locations, they direct energy from their hands into your body. You might feel a warm or tingling sensation during this energy transfer. All you need to do during your Reiki session is relax as your healer works to break up energetic blocks and support energy flow throughout your body.
Does it work?
Plenty of people are skeptical about Reiki. But studies show that it’s an effective treatment for a wide range of conditions. Specifically, they show that it activates your parasympathetic nervous system and relieves fatigue, pain, and anxiety. And over 50 hospitals currently use this healing technique as a complementary treatment.
Plus, it’s safe and natural. And it’s available in the comfortable, relaxing environment at the Ventura Counseling & Wellness Center. We have a certified Reiki Master on staff.
