This year, pride celebrations are going to look different. In recent years, June marked the start of a month of colorful community celebration in Ventura. While we can’t come together the way we have in Junes past, there are still safe ways to celebrate pride month.
We’ve gathered up just a few ways you can commemorate this month and show your pride! Here are four safe ways to celebrate pride month this June.
Tune in to a virtual pride parade
If you’re bummed you won’t be able to hit up WeHo this June and watch LA’s historic pride parade, don’t worry. While you might not be able to show up in person, Christopher Street West — the organization that hosts the parade each year — has reimagined it so we can all enjoy it safely.
This year, the parade will be virtual and will air on ABC7 as a primetime special on Saturday, June 27. Mark your calendar so you can tune in to be a part of the festivities.
The fun doesn’t have to stop there, either. GLAAD has a pretty extensive calendar of virtual pride events you can join this June.
Attend Global Pride 2020
While celebrating virtually can feel a little isolating, it also presents an opportunity to come together without physical distance posing a problem. This year, why not celebrate pride with the entire world?
Pride celebration organizers from all over are coming together to coordinate Global Pride 2020 on June 27. They’re still looking for volunteers, too, so you can jump in in an even bigger way.
Go to prom
Billboard and The Hollywood Summit have an announcement: “Pride is not canceled!”
This weekend, they’re hosting Pride Prom. With Billy Porter, Cyndi Lauper, Patrick Starr, Lance Bass, The Indigo Girls, and other notables, it promises to be a fun festivity.
Their site says, “Stay tuned for more info.” And since we’d love an excuse to dig out our fanciest clothes and get our dance on, we’ll be doing exactly that.
Visit Stonewall
You don’t have to hop on a plane to NYC to visit this historic birthplace of the pride movement. With Stonewall Forever, you can virtually tour the location where the 1969 uprising started, changing the trajectory of LGBTQ+ rights in our country.
We hope you have a safe and happy pride month! This is certainly a weird time to be celebrating. If you feel the heaviness of this year so far and want to talk to someone about it, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team at the Ventura Counseling & Wellness Center.
